Burlesque is the new film from director Steven Antin due out this coming holiday season. It is the story of a down and out owner of a lounge whom finds a bright shimmering star to bring the faltering venue back to it's feet. That down and out lounge owner is played by MIA actress Cher with the new star of the show played by singer Christina Aguilera. From the looks of the trailer it seems to share a lot of inspirations from the old cliche of a small town girl that comes to Hollywood to make something of herself and her struggles on the way to the top.
The one thing that makes this film stand out more than it normally would is that it is the feature film debut for Christina Aguilera. Watching the trailer you can see why they picked her for the part, besides her obvious musical talents she shares that kind of classic beauty from stage entertainers of the past. Her acting talents have yet to be proven and from what little is shown here it is impossible to come to any conclusions. I can only hope that they have kept most of her acting out of the trailer due to possible spoilers and not because of something else.
Lastly I would like to comment on the look of the film. This is the director's first feature length film and from what I can see in the trailer it looks like a very pretty one at that. The costumes remind me a lot of the film Chicago, where much of the set design gives off a Moulin Rouge feel, which is a good thing in my opinion. We haven't had a good musical for a while now and I hope this one fits the bill. Hopefully this will end up being a good start for Ms Aguilera's acting career and a return to form for the Hollywood musical.
